The St. Joseph Mustangs picked up a non-League victory tonight. The Mustangs defeated the BJ Raiders 9-1.
It was a scoreless ball game going into the bottom of fourth inning. After a Mike Sherburne walk and Joe Koerper single, the St. Joe native Hayden Steele hit a RBI single to make it 1-0. Next batter, Brandon Huske grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Joe Koerper.
The Mustangs’ offense exploded in the fifth inning with five runs. Eric Wilcoxson tripled to lead off the inning. After an Andrew Standifer walk, Mike Sherburne hit a triple that emptied the bases to make it 4-0. Joe Koerper doubled to center, which scored Sherburne. With one out, Brandon Huske hit a RBI single that scored Koerper and Huske scored on a RBI single by Zac Johnson to make it 7-0.
The Raiders scored one in the top of the sixth, but the Mustangs added another run on a RBI double by Koerper in the bottom of the sixth. St. Joe scored their ninth run of the night in the bottom of the eight on a RBI single by Brandon Huske.
The pitching staff for the Mustangs allowed only one run and one hit. Trent Kinney went seven innings, allowed one run, one hit, but struck out five. Tanner Smith pitched a scoreless eighth while striking out two and Redmond Floyd finished the night with a scoreless ninth.
The Mustangs travel tomorrow to take on the Sedalia Bombers. First pitch is scheduled for seven o’clock.
