Today's Spotlight: Lucas Powers

06/14/2014 9:17 AM -

June 14th, 2014 Meet the Mustang is Lucas Powers

Chris Roush: How did you get involved with baseball?

Lucas Powers: Just how fun it was and the fact that you have a chance to win no matter how much you’re down by. I like that because you can’t run the clock like in basketball and just being with friends playing ball in the summer.

CR: What is the first memory you have of baseball?

LP: I had this thing that would toss the ball to me and hit it back into it and hitting whiffle balls. I have a picture of it. I was two years old and just hitting the ball into the net and ever since then I’ve just loved it.

CR: Were you involved with other sports growing up?

LP: I played basketball growing up and when I got to high school, I started playing basketball, baseball, and football.

CR: When did you realize baseball was the sport you wanted to chase?

LP: I feel like it was the best sport that I played. I felt like I had the best opportunity to further my career in it and I just went with it.

CR: What was the feeling like knowing you had made it to the collegiate level?

LP: It was pretty awesome, not many people get to go out and play college sports.

CR: How did you come in contact with the Mustangs?

LP: I talked to my high school coach (Mike Musser) and he talked to the former GM Rick Muntean last year. He got me an interview and I talked to him and he wanted me to play. It’s what I always wanted to do. I remember coming to the Blacksnakes games, the Saints games, and even some Mustangs game when I was in seventh and eighth grade.

CR: When you were in the stands watching all these years, did you ever imagine you’d be playing back here for the Mustangs?

LP: No, I hadn’t really thought about it. I just looked up to those guys so much and I thought that it was high competition baseball. I wanted to do it, but it really never came into my head. Once I got the opportunity, it was just like butterflies in my stomach.

CR: Being from St. Joseph, what is it like coming back to play once again?

LP: I love it; I get to stay at home. I know a lot of the guys have to travel around and they are from coast to coast. I’m the kid that gets to sleep in his own bed and having the support of not just my family, but all of these fans. There is no better feeling than stepping into the box and every one yelling “Come on, Luke!”

CR: When you look into the stands, you see 3,000 plus fans, what is that like?

LP: It’s awesome, we always joke about how many people could be here any given night. When you get on the field, it’s just like you’re a little kid again. It all comes back and it’s so much fun.

CR: During the first three weeks of the season, I’ve noticed how close you guys are. How did you guys build such chemistry so quickly?

LP: We just believe in each other and if someone makes a mistake, there is someone to pick them up. We all know there is a reason we are here playing for the Mustangs. We just believe that even if the hits aren’t falling, but we keep going and believing in each other, then it will be okay. It’s fun being around a group of guys that will pick up when you’re down.

CR: What’s this year been like for you?

LP: It’s been a blast so far, we are still trying to get to know each other. It’s just been so much fun so far.
