The St. Joseph Mustangs hang on to beat the Omaha Diamond Spirit tonight. The Mustangs defeated the Diamond Spirit 5-4.
St. Joseph scored the first five runs of the game with three of them coming in the third inning. Ryan Abernathy led the charge for the Mustangs. Abernathy went two for three and hit his first home run of the summer. With the Mustangs already in front 1-0, Abernathy hit a two run shot to make it 3-0. St. Joseph added another run in the fourth when Zac Johnson hit a solo home run. The Mustangs picked up their fifth and final run in the fifth inning. Ryan Abernathy hit a single that scored Andrew Standifer.
Trent Kinney took the mound for the Mustangs. Kinney pitched seven and two thirds innings of shutout ball, but allowed two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Austin Aspegren got the Mustangs out of the jam in the eighth. Jon Pomatto started the bottom of the ninth, but allowed two runs in the two thirds of an inning. Brett Ash recorded the final out and closed the door to earn his eighth save on the season.
Kinney picked up the victory, allowing two runs on six hits, but struck out five. Wes Todd took the loss for Omaha. Todd pitched five innings allowed five runs on six hits, while striking out six.
The Mustangs are back home tomorrow night in MINK League action. St. Joseph hosts the Omaha Diamond Spirit with first pitch scheduled for seven o’clock.
