In their first game at Phil Welch since last Saturday, the St. Joseph Mustangs fell to the Omaha Diamond Spirit. The Omaha Diamond Spirit defeated the Mustangs 3-2 tonight.
The first runs of the game didn’t come until the top of the fifth inning. The Diamond Spirit scored two runs off of Mustangs’ starter Jeremiah Figueroa to make it 2-0.
The Mustangs answered with one of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Abernathy scored on a Joe Koerper fielder’s choice to make it 2-1.
St. Joseph tied it up in the bottom of the seventh inning when Brandon Huske scored on a throwing error.
The game remained tied until the top of the ninth, when the Diamond Spirit plated a run with one out to make it 3-2.
Jeremiah Figueroa went 4 2/3’s innings allowing two runs on four hits. Grant Gavin pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing just one hit. Austin Aspegren pitched a scoreless eighth inning while striking out two. Jon Pomatto came in for the ninth, but surrenders one run on one hit.
Derek Pike picked up the victory for Omaha. Jon Pomatto suffered the loss for the Mustangs. Max Carter recorded his first save for the Diamond Spirit.
The Mustangs go to 14-5 on the season and the Diamond Spirit improves to 7-10.
St. Joseph is back in action tomorrow night. They take on the Branson Nationals in a MINK League doubleheader beginning at 5:30.
