Mustangs, Mudcats split; Mustangs keep North lead

07/18/2014 7:16 AM -

With first place in the MINK League North Division on the line, the St. Joseph Mustangs and Chillicothe Mudcats split a doubleheader Thursday night. Entering Thursday night’s doubleheader, the Mustangs held a one game lead over the Mudcats.

In game one, Chillicothe jumped on Mustangs’ starter Dixon Marble in the first inning. The Mudcats scored two runs on three hits, but a Joe Koerper unassisted double play ended the threat in the first.

The Mustangs’ offense sparked in the third inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Trent Hill walked and the Mustangs got on the board. Next batter, Koerper singled to left field to score Brandon Huske from third to make it a tied ball game. Mike Sherburne hit another single and scored Trent Hill to give the Mustangs the lead 3-2. The next batter Kyle Richards doubled to give the Mustangs the lead 5-2.

The Mudcats scored one more run in the fifth inning to make 5-3, but Mustangs held on to take game one.

Dixon Marble picked up the victory. He went five innings allowed five hits, three runs, walked two, and struck out one. Trent Hill pitched the final two innings to record the save. Hill allowed just one hit and struck out four.

The victory in game one gave the Mustangs a two game lead in the North division.

In game two, Jake Jones took the mound for the Mustangs. Jones entered the game with a 3-0 record, but ran into trouble early. Chillicothe pounded out two hits and a run in the top of the first inning to give the Mudcats the early lead.

Jones made quick work of the Mudcats in the second, but allowed a three run home run in the third inning.

The Mustangs offense split the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two away and the bases loaded, Zac Johnson hit a single to left field and scored Trent Hill and Joe Koerper.

St. Joseph made it a one run ball game in the fifth when Eric Wilcoxson scored on a wild pitch. The Mustangs tied it up on a bases loaded walk to Mike Sherburne.

The game remained tied heading into the seventh inning and the Chillicothe Mudcats posted three runs in the frame to give them the lead and eventually the victory.

Jake Jones suffered the loss for the Mustangs. The righty went 6 1/3 innings allowed six hits, six runs, walked one, but struck out ten. Austin Aspegren finished the seventh inning and allowed one run.

The Mudcats pulled to within one game of the Mustangs with the win in game two. The Mustangs return to action Friday night when they take on the Omaha Diamond Spirit at Phil Welch Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30.
