The St. Joseph Mustangs took on a division rival in the Clarinda A’s last night. In a game threatened by rain, the Mustangs struck early scoring the game’s first run in the bottom of the 1st off Clarinda’s starter Jordan Dreibelbis. Jacob Richardson led the inning off with a single, and eventually came around to score on a Josh Cassidy single. They scored again in the third after Richardson walked, and came home on an error by the A’s third baseman making the score 2-0.
Pitching for St. Joseph was Miles Gully, 3-1 with a 3.71 ERA. Gully pitched 5.2 strong innings, allowing only 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 2 and walking only 1 man. He carried a shutout through the 5th, until the A’s adjusted to Gully in the top of the 6th. The A’s tagged Miles for 2 runs, bringing his night to an end.
St. Joseph answered the inning immediately in the bottom half, erupting to put up 5 runs in the inning. Brett Bond led off with a single, and came around to score on an error by the first baseman which also allowed Trent Hill to reach base safely. Jordan Powell and Jackson Schnurbush followed it up with 2 straight singles, driving in an additional 2 runs. Jacob Richardson then busted the game wide open with a 2 run jack over the right field wall. Making it a 5 run game.
Clarinda attempted to rally in the top half of the ninth against reliever Ross Juliana, but it proved unsuccessful as they scored only one run. Juliana gave up to singles to start the inning, but then induced a ground ball double play to reduce the threat. After giving up an RBI single, Juliana closed out the game, securing the victory.
Miles Gully was the winning pitcher, and Clarinda’s Dreibelbis was on the hook for the loss. The Mustangs won 7-3, winning their second straight game. They improved to 23-9 on the season.
