Kyle Uhrich's two-run home run in the eighth inning lifted St. Joseph to its sixth straight win.
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - With fireworks going off throughout the area and a haze setting in during the eighth inning, Kyle Uhrich sent a high fly ball into the parking lot beyond the left field fences to lift the Mustangs to a memorable Independence Day win.
The late-inning home run gave St. Joseph (24-8, 17-8 MINK) a 10-9 win over division rival Sedalia. The Mustangs lead in the MINK League North is now up to two games with less than three weeks remaining in the regular season.
Trailing 9-8 entering the bottom of the inning, Jacob Richardson chopped a one-out single through the hole on the right side to start the rally. Two batters later, Uhrich stepped up to the plate with two down and a runner in scoring position.
The designated hitter from Webster University drilled a 1-1 pitch to deep left for his fifth home run of the season, and a lead the Mustangs would not give back.
Steve D'Amico struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to earn his third save of the season.
Drew Ferguson recorded the win pitching 1.2 innings and allowing just one hit and one walk.
Uhrich finished the night 3-5 at the plate with a home run, a double and 3 RBI.
Evan McDonald upped his batting average to .458 with three more hits and 5 RBI.
Louis Mele also continued his torrid pace with a 3-3 night, one walk and two runs.
The Mustangs play in Chillicothe Tuesday night, then return home to face Nevada Wednesday.
