Mustangs Mash Mudcats, 10-3

06/21/2017 9:44 PM -

Wednesday night marked the first 36 Highway rivalry dual of the season as a five run seventh inning combined with a strong closing finish by Nikko Pablo helped launch the Mustangs into a 10-3 victory over the Chillicothe Mudcats.

Back to back walks of Colton Pogue and Jacob Richardson marked the lead setting bottom of the second inning.  A single by Brody Santilli brought in the duo for the first two runs of the game with two outs in the inning.

Offensive strength continued through the final moments of the inning as Santilli stole  to second and third with Matt Wollnick at bat. Wollnick singled soon after bringing in Santilli from third. A Brady Anderson double brought Wollnick home from first, giving the Mustangs a 4-0 lead to end the inning.

Santilli finished the game two-for-four  with four RBIs. Anderson stood right behind him, finishing three-for-five with one RBI.

Starting pitcher Osvaldo Raya gave up his only run of the game in the top of the third, but a single by Erasmo Gonzalez brought in Drew Standifer to erase any Mudcat damage leaving the score 5-1.

Raya was pulled in the top of the seventh after two Mudcats advanced to base with no outs. He allowed seven hits on the night, striking out four.

Nikko Pablo stepped to mound in place of Raya, allowing no runs against his name.  The two runners Raya allowed to base scored, shortening the Mustangs’ lead to 5-3.

The Mustangs responded in the bottom half of the inning beginning with an Anderson single. Anderson advanced to second on a wild pitch, just before Louis Mele doubled to bring him in.

Mele advanced to home following an error by the shortstop which brought Standifer to first base.

A single by Pogue drove the Mustangs to bring out their third pitcher of the game with no outs and two on base.

Richardson launched the ball to right field for a single on the pitcher’s second pitch, bringing in Standifer.

With two outs on board, Santilli recorded an RBI double bringing in Pogue and Richardson. The Mustang offensive drive came to an end after, leaving the Mustangs with a 10-3 lead.

Pablo continued his strong relief showing, closing the game for the Mustangs. He allowed two  hits, and extended his scoreless inning streak to  in his  seven appearances.

The Mustangs head to Jefferson City Thursday night. Matt Diaz (0-1, 6.75 ERA) takes mound for the first and only game of the road trip. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. Fans unable to make the trip can find a stream of the game at https://www.uclicktv.com/.
