Mustangs Make Summer Reading Fun for Students

On Friday morning, students of Lindbergh Elementary School welcomed a few Mustangs players into their classrooms for a summer reading session.

The players greeted students, introduced themselves and answered questions about the Mustangs and themselves from the students before hitting the books and starting the read-aloud session.

The main goal of the event was to inspire kids to read more over the summer months while school is out for summer break.

“Our goal is [for them to] pick up more books through the summer,” said Jennifer Davidson, event organizer. “If the guys from the Mustangs can talk to the kids and show them how much fun reading can be, whether it’s a picture book or a chapter book, the kids will hopefully pick up books at the library or the local bookstores to read over the summer.”

The players were glad to be able to give back to the community that supports them throughout the season.

“I’m looking forward to getting out in the community and interacting with the kids and just having an overall fun day with them,” said Brayden Luikart, Mustangs outfielder. “I think it's crucial to get involved with the community because these guys come out and support us every game with their families, so we are just spreading the Mustangs love a little bit by getting out into the community and making it a better place.”

After spending a couple hours with the students, the Mustangs headed back to Phil Welch Stadium to gear up for their game against the Carroll Merchants and invited the kids to come join them for the experience.

“The Mustangs are great for the kids because they have somebody to look up to, because sometimes our kids don't have somebody that's a great role model, so it's just great for them to be able to experience something like this,” Davidson said.
