ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The St. Joseph Mustangs took down the Carroll Merchants for their first win of the season on Friday night, 6-2.

Lane Chapman led the way as he twirled five shutout innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit. In the loss on Wednesday, efficiency was a problem for the pitching staff, but Chapman turned that around in the win.

A wild pitch allowed the Mustangs’ offense to get on the board first in the third inning, although they did squander a chance to add more after Ayden Schrunk got out of a bases loaded jam.

Micah Kobuszewski provided an offensive spark as he drove in two with a double. That would ultimately give the Mustangs enough for the win.

In the fifth inning, Chris Coy and Seth Winkler dropped in hits of their own to stretch the lead to 6-0. Those six runs of insurance proved to be plenty for the Mustangs’ pitching staff.

While the Merchants did score two in the sixth on a wild pitch and a double, they didn’t have enough to pose a real threat to the Mustangs’ lead.

St. Joseph will host the Ban Johnson Raiders on Saturday night at Phil Welch as they look to move above .500 for the first time in 2026. First pitch will be at 7 p.m.
