ST. JOSEPH, MO. -- The St. Joseph Mustangs will feature two new faces on the field on Thursday, June 9th. For the first time in team history, the team will have two female coaches; Sammey Bunch and Lexi Kinnaird.

In high school, Sammey was honored all four years as an All-State, First Team All Conference, and was also selected as a Conference MVP twice. She went on to play collegiate softball at the University of Northern Iowa. While there, she was named an All American and 2 time Conference Player of the Year. In 2020, she was named to the USA Softball Top 50 Player of the Year Watchlist and was named USA Softball Top 25 Player of the Year Watchlist in 2021. Sammey is also currently an instructor at the Marek Baseball Academy.

Lexi recently completed her third season on the softball coaching staff at MWSU after having pitched there for one season.Prior to pitching at MWSU, Lexi played at Kirkwood Community College. While there, she broke the school record for wins, going 55-6. While there, she was also named a First Team All American Pitcher in 2017.

Both Bunch and Kinnaird are a part of Women in Sports Night at the Mustangs on Thursday, June 9th- during the game, we’ll be sharing accomplishments by female athletes and coaches, and sharing the vast impact they have had. In 2018, Regan Nash was the first female to play collegiate summer baseball in the MINK League, playing for the Mustangs on July 4th.

Mustangs Manager Johnny Coy said, “Both of them played at a very high level and now coach at a high level. Women are breaking barriers all over Major League Baseball and inspiring young girls all over the country. We are excited to have this opportunity to have Lexi and Sammey in our community. They are great role models. We hope to see a number of young girls at the game to cheer them on, and of course they can get their autographs after the game.”

Gates for the game on June 8th will open at 5:30 pm, with First Pitch set for 7pm. The Mustangs will begin play on Wednesday, June 1, vs the Clarinda A’s on June 1. Season and single game tickets are on sale now, as well as sponsorships and group outings. For more information, please call the Mustangs ticket office at 816.279.STJO (7856).
