Mustangs body Bombers

Updated: Jul 6

After a late-game win against the Chillicothe Mudcats, the St Joe Mustangs moved to the 4th of July festivities to play the Sedalia Bombers.

The Mustangs faced the Bombers last time at their home stadium of Liberty Park on June 18th, where they beat the Bombers 5-2. The Mustangs hope to keep their winning ways against the Bombers going in today's game.

Starting pitcher Denton Biller took the mound for the first inning and took the first three batters in order, recording a strikeout. Biller returned in the second inning, taking down the Bomber's batters in order, throwing 24 pitches in the two innings.

In the third inning, Biller walked Bombers center fielder Chris Miller. Miller advanced to third after Bombers second baseman Ryan Retone doubled, putting runners on corners. Left fielder Sam Russo grounded out to shortstop Mason Holton, scoring Miller for the Bombers to lead 0-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, designated hitter Jeter Mauzey blasted a solo homer to left field to tie the game at 1.

In the fifth, Biller retook the mound, giving up a single to Bombers shortstop Sam Paule and a double to Retone. Russo hit a sacrifice fly to score Paule, putting the Bombers ahead 1-2.

The Mustangs rallied in the fifth inning. Second baseman Carson Schrack singled, and third baseman Jordan Black doubled to put runners on second and third. First Baseman Jayden Little singles to score Schrack to tie the game at 2. Left fielder Easton Bruce hit a sacrifice fly to score Black to lead 3-2. After a single by right fielder Darius Freeman, Holton hits a sacrifice fly to score Little to extend their lead 4-2.

Relief pitcher Jase Johnson came into the sixth inning. Johnson gave up two hits and recorded a strikeout. Bruce stopped an extra-base hit with a fantastic catch in left field.

In the seventh, relief pitcher Bronco Witt pitched. Witt gave up no hits but hit a batter.

Relief pitcher Noah Thomas came into the eighth inning, striking out two batters. Catcher Dom Felix caught a Bomber trying to steal a second for the second out.

Holton singled and stole second in the bottom of the eighth inning to be put in scoring position. Mauzey singled to score Holton to extend the lead 5-2.

In the ninth inning, closing pitcher Tim Teixeira got into a chaotic situation. After Bombers designated hitter Will Muench singled and found himself on third, Paule singled to drive Muench home to trail 5-3. Rentone singled to put runners on first and second. Bombers third baseman Tanner Grant singled to score Paule and put the tying run on third to trail 5-4. Teixeira stopped all momentum after ending the game by striking out Bombers first baseman Nathan Huie looking for a Mustangs win 5-4.

Your Mustangs player of the game was Jeter Mauzey, who had a solo home run and two RBIs.

The Mustangs travel to Warren County to play the Crop Dusters at 5:00 p.m.

But you can catch the Alumni vs St. Joe All-Stars Game at Phil Welch at 7:00 p.m., where fans can win three free tickets to the Savanah Banana's game on July 6th.
