St. Joseph, Mo. (July 16, 2021) - The Mustangs needed just two runs to take down the Kansas City Monarchs on Friday evening. The Mustangs beat the Monarchs by a final score of 2-0.
In front of a huge crowd of 3,881 fans at Phil Welch, the Mustangs played in a non-conference matchup.
The evening was very busy on and off the base paths. The Special Olympics of Missouri had a pre-game performance and raised money throughout the game for the Special Olympics games that are quickly approaching. The Mustangs also celebrated Bark in the Park, which had been rescheduled several times due to rain.
The packed crowd only gave the Mustangs even more incentive to win. Mustangs starting pitcher Dawson Smith, and Player of the Game, needed just two runs of support to dominate the Monarchs. He pitched a complete game masterpiece, striking out eight and allowing just five hits and no runs in the affair.
The Mustangs plated one run in the first inning, giving the team a lead that they would never relinquish.
In the seventh, the Mustangs added a much-needed insurance run on a fielder’s choice and error by the Monarchs. The Mustangs would make it a two-run ball game.
The game lasted just over two hours, both starting pitchers making quick work of their opponent.
