Mustangs mash Mudcats

After a heartbreaking 11-15 loss to the Carroll Merchants, the Mustangs needed to regroup to take this next week seriously. The Mustangs had no better chance as they faced a fierce rival in the Chillicothe Mudcats.

The Mustangs were victorious after the last four games against the Mudcats and were looking for a fifth today as they stepped into Shaffer Park to face the Mudcats.

Starting pitcher Roy Holcomb has had great pitching for the entire Mustangs season as he makes his next start, where he faced four batters, giving up a walk and no runs.

The Mustangs struck first in the second, as first baseman Jeter Mauzey and third baseman Jayden Little singled to put runners on first and second. Shortstop Carson Schmidt drove Mauzey home with a single to make the Mustangs' lead in the second inning 1-0.

Holcomb got into a deep situation in the second inning but got out of it successfully, giving up no runs for a scoreless five innings.

In the sixth inning, left fielder Noah Bodenhaus walked and advanced to second off a Mauzey single to be put in scoring position. Catcher Dom Felix extends the Mustangs lead with a double, scoring Bodenhaus to make the lead 2-0.

Relief pitcher Trenton Roehler came into the sixth inning fresh. In the sixth, a Mudcat grounded out to Little and recorded the out at first, scoring the first Mudcat run to trail 2-1.

Roehler had a better seventh inning, keeping his pace and giving up a hit. Felix threw out a pinch runner to end the inning.

In the eighth, Mauzey walked and put himself in scoring position when he stole second. Designated hitter, Jackson Glueck's groundout, pushed Mauzey to third. Felix hit another RBI double to score Mauzey from third and extend the Mustangs' lead to 3-1. Little backed up Felix with another RBI double, scoring Felix to extend the lead to 4-1.

Roehler closed out the next two innings, facing seven batters and recording two strikeouts, to end the game with a win for the Mustangs.

The Mustang's next game will be at Phil Welch, where they will face the Clarinda A's at 7 p.m. for Minions Night.
