Sam Kissane leads the Mustangs to an 8-5 victory on Friday

St. Joseph, Mo. (June 18, 2021) - The air was hot and so were the St. Joseph Mustangs in Friday night’s game against the Des Moines Peak Prospects. St. Joseph pushed past Des Moines by a final score of 8-5 at Phil Welch Stadium.

For the first three innings, the Prospects and Mustangs went back and forth with the lead until a big double from Player of the Game Sam Kissane pushed three runs across. Those three runs would be the difference in the three-run ball game.

In front of a large Friday night crowd of 1,749, the Mustangs moved to 7-5 on the season as they prepare for the final game of the homestand tomorrow night.

“I love the fans,” said Kissane. “Being from a small town -- seeing all of these people come out -- it’s really awesome to pull out a win in front of them.”

The starting pitcher for the Mustangs, Drake Kanallakan, played a part in the Mustangs’ big win.

The first two innings were rocky for the starter, allowing four runs. Kanallakan settled down after the second inning and was able to pitch four more innings for the Mustangs without allowing a run.

Kanallakan finished the evening with five strikeouts and six innings pitched. He would also leave with the lead still intact.

The Mustangs would add a run in seventh and the Prospects would plate a fifth run in the ninth inning, but the game was truly decided in the Mustangs’ big third inning.

The Mustangs are back in action on Saturday evening for Space Jam Night. Kids will take the field before the Mustangs on Saturday. There is also a Mustangs Poster giveaway happening when the gates open at 5:30 p.m.

Following the Mustangs matchup with North Kansas City at 7:00 p.m., the Mustangs will host a Saturday Night Firework Spectacular.
