Stephenson fans 14 Bombers in Mustangs 4-1 win

St. Joseph, Mo. (July 4, 2021) - The Mustangs had fireworks of their own in their Independence Day matchup against the Sedalia Bombers. St. Joseph took the lead in the bottom of the second inning and would never relinquish it in their 4-1 win over Sedalia.

The majority of the Mustangs’ success can be attributed to starting pitcher Mack Stephenson’s brilliance on the mound. Stephenson pitched a complete game on Sunday, fanning 14 Bombers and not allowing a single walk in the affair.

Stephenson allowed just one run to cross the plate in the fifth inning. The run scored on a blooper to the centerfielder, just out of the reach of Brady Holden’s outstretched glove.

Stephenson’s complete game earned him his second Player of the Game title in 2021.

Stephenson shared the Player of the Game honor with Michael Paule, who scored two of the Mustangs’ four runs. He scored the first run of the game by stealing home. He safely executed the steal, sliding into home just as the pitch crossed the plate.

The Mustangs will head to Clarinda to take on the MINK League North Division-leading A’s on Monday evening.

On Wednesday, the Mustangs will travel back home to Phil Welch for another game against the Chillicothe Mudcats.
