The Mustangs sweep doubleheader against Des Moines

St. Joseph, Mo. (July 13, 2021) - The Mustangs hosted Des Moines for a doubleheader on Tuesday and swept the Prospects on Tuesday, July 13 by a score of 4-1 in Game One and 12-2 in Game Two.

Each game of the doubleheader was shortened to just two seven-inning games. Due in part to recent rainouts and scheduling conflicts, the Mustangs were the home team in Game One but would be the visiting team in Game Two.

Game One was highlighted by a deep home run to left field by Dakota Spicer in the bottom of the sixth inning. The big fly provided a much-needed insurance run in the final innings of the ball game to propel the Mustangs past Des Moines.

The Mustangs broke the tie game in the fourth inning on back-to-back singles by Noah Bodenhausen and Cole Slibowski. The base hits knocked in a pair of runs to take the lead in the first game.

In the second game, neither team could push a run across in the early innings, regardless of the action on the base paths. The Prospects were the first team to score, plating a run in both the fourth and fifth innings.

The Mustangs scored twelve unanswered runs in the final two innings of the game. The Prospects could not overcome the 10-run deficit in the final innings and the Mustangs would win at home as the visiting team over Des Moines.

“We have a lot of games coming up in the next couple of weeks,” coach Johnny Coy said following Tuesday’s game. “We play almost every day and we need to just take it one day at a time. We just need to continue to have a good approach at the plate, throw strikes and the rest will take care of itself.”

The Mustangs travel to Clarinda, IA for a doubleheader on Wednesday, July 14 and then are back at Phil Welch Stadium for Family Night on Thursday. The Mustangs begin a three-game homestand on Thursday.
