St. Joseph, Mo. (June 19, 2021) - The Mustangs completed a three-game homestand sweep on Saturday, winning their third game in as many days with a 5-3 victory over the North Kansas City Giants.
The Mustangs jumped on the board early, scoring three runs in the first inning off of back-to-back-to-back doubles. Brady Holden recorded the first double, knocking in leadoff hitter Cole Slibowski in the process.
Mustangs Ike Book followed in suit, knocking in two more runs in the first inning on a deep fly ball off the wall to extend the lead.
Mustangs’ starting pitcher Mack Stephenson took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, allowing just four hits in seven innings. He allowed one run in the opening frame on a leadoff walk. The Giants added two more runs in the seventh to make it close, but the Mustangs kept the Giants off the scoreboard in the final innings.
Book was awarded Player of the Game, tallying three hits and two RBIs in the Mustangs win.
“I’ve had as many bad games as anyone this season,” Book said. “We have just been picking each other up so that we still feel pretty good even after a rough game. I think that’s going to take us a long way.”
The Mustangs will take a three-game winning streak on the road as they head east for a conference contest against the Chillicothe Mudcats for the first time this season on Sunday.
Following Sunday’s game, the Mustangs will be back at Phil Welch Stadium for a seven-game homestand. St. Joseph will play seven games in six days during the last week in June, featuring several promotional giveaways and a doubleheader on June 29, 2021.
