ST. JOSEPH, MO. -- Daniel Gerson, founder and owner of the St. Joseph Mustangs, has sold ownership rights of the team. The St. Joseph Mustangs are being purchased by Ky Turner, current Mustangs GM.
The Saint Joseph Mustangs began play at Phil Welch Stadium in 2009. A collegiate summer baseball team, the team has won seven MINK League Championships, and placed in the top ten nationally in attendance for eight consecutive seasons. The team has been managed by Matthew Johnson, with former Mustangs MVP and current manager Johnny Coy taking over in 2018.
“It’s really an important day in the history of the Mustangs. I wanted to keep the ownership local. I’ve had other suitors, but Ky was the person I wanted to take over and it is time,” said Gerson. “I knew Ky was the best person. It wasn’t about the money, but Ky is the right guy for St. Joe. It all fell into place and he is the right person to carry on the Mustangs. It’s been a great run. I started the Mustangs to bring a successful team to St. Joseph. And I think we’ve done that.”
Turner has been with the team since its inception, and took over the General Manager role in 2014. “Working for Dan has been a blessing. His love of baseball, his knowledge as a businessman, and his focus on always doing what is best for the customer has been the guiding force for the organization. It’s been an incredible journey together. That’s not necessarily ending, as I consider Dan both a friend and a mentor,” said Turner.
Turner continued, “I’m excited for the opportunity to continue to grow and continue to deliver affordable family fun to our wonderful community. I was raised in this community, I shop in this community, I am raising my kids in this community. I hope to make everyone proud, whether that's my own family or the extended family that we have created through our summers spent together at Phil Welch.”
The Mustangs will enter season thirteen in 2022. The Mustangs Opening Day, for the first time under Turner’s ownership, will be on Wednesday, May 31st, 2022. The entire 2022 schedule will be released in the coming days.
